Discover it® Cash Back review

Five percent back on categories that change every quarter, and Discover matches everything you earn in your first year. That combination is hard to beat, as long as you remember to activate.

The verdict

For a first year with the card, nothing in this comparison earns more. Cashback Match doubles every dollar you earn, with no cap and no spending requirement, so the 5% categories effectively pay 10% and the base rate pays 2%. From year two the card is ordinary again, which is worth planning for.Jump to:The full review

The full review

The Discover it Cash Back pays 5% in categories that rotate every three months, on up to $1,500 of spending in each quarter, and 1% on everything else. Hit the cap all four quarters and the categories alone are worth $300 a year.

What separates it from other no-fee cards is Cashback Match. At the end of your first twelve statement months, Discover matches every dollar you earned. There is no cap, no application and no minimum spend, so someone who earns $400 gets another $400.

The trade-offs are real. You have to activate the categories yourself each quarter, the 5% stops at the cap, and everything outside the bonus categories earns a flat 1%, which is below what a 2% flat-rate card pays. If you travel, Discover is accepted in far fewer places abroad than Visa or Mastercard.
